The Music Generation Mayo- Exceptional Music Student Bursary Scheme will not be running in 2017.

This scheme, which offered financial support to young musicians, who could demonstrate exceptional musical ability in any genre of instrumental or vocal music, operated for four years, 2013-16 inclusive.

We are delighted to have supported a wealth of talented young musicians through this scheme, however as our programmes have expanded considerably, we must priortise available funds towards these tuition strands.

We will be considering other ways to support exceptional young musicians in 2018 and we thank all of you who have engaged with the scheme to date and wish you luck with your future development.

Music Generation Mayo in partnership with RIAM Teaching and Learning Network are delighted to offer a one -day workshop with Guitarist Redmond O'Toole on Wednesday April 19th in Castlebar, Co.Mayo.

This workshop, open to guitar tutors, enthusiasts and third level students, will outline the basic principles and techniques of Derek Gripper's Montessori Guitar method.

Redmond show events page 2x

The method is a ground-breaking teaching approach that focuses on the fundamental elements of learning the guitar. Drawing on the philosophies of Maria Montessori, it uses tactile objects and visuals to teach beginners how to play the guitar. It simplifies tablature and chord windows and enables the student to experience the instrument through a progressive curve that develops creativity and confidence. It enables small group teaching and supports differing abilities within groups.

Redmond O'Toole has been using the method extensively through his educational work for Music Generation, RIAM and KWETB for the past 5 years and has taught hundreds of children the basics of guitar playing through this method. Students can then progress to any style of playing having mastered the basics and learned to read tablature, chord windows and mensural notation rhythm.

“What [Derek Gripper] is doing in his life with educational and other projects is inspiring, and to be honest, I think it is where the guitar should be going.” John Williams in Classical Guitar Magazine UK

Music Generation Mayo in partnership with The Arts Council of Ireland and Songbirds is offering an amazing opportunity for young musicians and singers in Co.Mayo aged 13-18 yrs. to participate in a unique project to explore and develop their songwriting and musical skills. The project will take place over 3 months, culminating in a series of mastered recordings and a live concert.

What’s involved?

During the course of the project participants will engage in a series of workshops and be brought through the songwriting process from sketch to demo to a final recording of their song/music.

The Songbirds musicians will show participants how to develop structure and harmony in their compositions, as well as looking at topics such as arrangement, music appreciation, recording and live performance tips including microphone technique and stage set-up.

Participants will be encouraged to be involved in all project outcomes, e.g. event organisation, production roles, promotion, documentation and presentation. The project will aim to provide young musicians with the tools necessary for creative expression through lyrics and music and to become future drivers of similar projects as part of their own musical development.

Recordings will take place throughout the project with each individual producing a professionally mastered CD on completion. Shortly after the workshops have ended, participants will rehearse and perform their finished songs at a live concert.
